പോർത്തുഗീസ് മെത്രാനായ ആർച്ചുബിഷപ്പ് മെനെസെസിൻറെ വരവോടുകൂടി A.D. 52 ൽ സ്ഥാപിതമായ മലങ്കരയിലെ പുരാതന സഭ വിഭജിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. മലങ്കരയിൽ പല ഇടത്തും സംഭവിച്ചതുപോലെ ഇടപ്പള്ളി കേന്ദ്രമായി നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന മലങ്കര നസ്രാണികൾ കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭയിൽ ചേരുവാനിടയായി. അങ്ങനെ, പിൽകാലത്ത് വാണിജ്യപരമായും വ്യവസായികമായും അഭിവൃദ്ധി പ്രാപിച്ച എറണാകുളം പട്ടണത്തിൽ പുരാതനത്വം അവകാശപ്പെടുവാൻ നമ്മുടെ സഭാംഗങ്ങൾ ഇല്ലാതെ പോയി.
ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൻറെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ അന്ന് എറണാകുളത്ത് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ചുരുക്കം വീട്ടുകാരും, വ്യാപാരം, ഉദ്യോഗം, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, അഭിഭാഷകവൃത്തി തുടങ്ങിയ കാര്യങ്ങൾക്കായി വന്നിരുന്ന ഏതാനും പേരുമാണ് നമ്മുടെ സഭാംഗങ്ങളായി ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. അവർ പലപ്പോഴും തങ്ങളുടെ ആത്മീയാവശ്യങ്ങൾ നിർവ്വഹിക്കുവാൻ തൃപ്പൂണിത്തുറ തുടങ്ങിയ സമീപ ഇടവകകളെ സമീപിക്കേണ്ടിയിരുന്നു.
എറണാകുളത്ത് സ്വന്തമായി ഒരു ആരാധനാലയം ഉണ്ടായാലേ ഈ ദുഃസ്ഥിതി മാറുകയുള്ളൂ എന്ന ഘട്ടം വന്നു. സഭാ സ്നേഹികളും പ്രഗത്ഭരുമായിരുന്ന ശ്രീമാൻ പി. വി. ഫിലിപ്പ് വക്കീൽ, റാവൂസാഹിബ് പി. കെ. വറൂഗീസ്, എം. ഐ. വർക്കി, എം. എ. ചാക്കോ എന്നിവർ കൂടി ഒരു പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നതിനാവശ്യമായ സ്ഥലം സമ്പാദിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് ആലോചിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ, ഇപ്പോൾ പള്ളിയിരിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തിൽ 28 സെൻറ് ഭൂമി ചെറായി, അയ്യമ്പിള്ളി എന്നീ പള്ളികളുടെ സഹായത്തോടെ 11 പേർ ഉൾപ്പെട്ട ഒരു കമ്മിറ്റിയുടെ പേർക്ക് പള്ളിക്കായി കൊല്ലവർഷം 1098-ൽ (A.D. 1922) തീറുവാങ്ങി.
പള്ളി പണിയുന്നതിന് അത്യുത്സാഹം ചെയ്തിരുന്ന ശ്രീ. ഫിലിപ്പ് വക്കീൽ തൻറെ ആഗ്രഹം നിറവേറി കാണുന്നതിനുമുൻപ് നിര്യാതനായി. അന്നത്തെ ഗവൺമെൻറിൻറെ പ്രത്യേക അനുമതി പ്രകാരം അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻറെ മൃതശരീരം പള്ളിയുടെ വടക്കേ മുറ്റത്ത് പള്ളിയോട് ചേർന്ന് സംസ്കരിച്ചു. ആ ശവകുടീരം 2010-ൽ സൗകര്യാർത്ഥം പള്ളിയുടെ വടക്ക് പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ഭാഗത്ത് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന കുരിശിൻ തൊട്ടിയുടെ സമീപത്തേക്ക് മാറ്റി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.
ഇന്ന് പള്ളിയിരിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തിൻറെ തെക്കുഭാഗത്ത് ഒറ്റ ഹോളായി ഒരു ചെറിയ പള്ളി പണിയുകയും 1102, കന്നിമാസം 20-ാം തീയതി (A.D. 1926) കോതമംഗലത്ത് കബറടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന പ. യൽദോ മാർ ബസേലിയോസ് ബാവായുടെ ഓർമ്മ ദിവസം, പരിശുദ്ധ ദൈവമാതാവിൻറെ നാമത്തിൽ ആദ്യ കുർബ്ബാന അർപ്പിച്ചു. ആരംഭം മുതൽ ബ. മുരിക്കലച്ചൻ വികാരിയായും പുത്തൻ പുരയ്ക്കൽ ശ്രീ. പി. വി. കുര്യൻ ട്രസ്റ്റിയായും തുടർന്നു.
ഇടവക പള്ളിയുടെ പൂർണ്ണതയ്ക്ക് ഒരു സെമിത്തേരി ആവശ്യമായതിനാൽ പിന്നീട് അതിനു വേണ്ടി ശ്രമമാരംഭിച്ചു. ശ്രീമാൻ എം. എ. ചാക്കോ, ഡോക്ടർ പോൾ പുത്തൂരാൻ എന്നിവരുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ സർക്കാരിൽ നിന്ന് പ്രത്യേക അനുമതി വാങ്ങി ഒരു ഭാഗ്യക്കുറി നടത്തി. അതിൽ നിന്ന് ലഭിച്ച തുക ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഇന്നത്തെ പള്ളിയുടെ വടക്കുവശം 5½ സെൻറ് സ്ഥലം കൂടി വാങ്ങി മതിൽ കെട്ടുകയും സെമിത്തേരിക്കായി ചിറ്റൂർ റോഡിൽ 15 സെൻറ് സ്ഥലം വാങ്ങി അതിൽ ഒരു ചെറിയ ചാപ്പൽ പണിയുകയും ചെയ്തു.
1959 ജനുവരി 15-ാം തീയതി (ദൈവമാതാവിൻറെ പെരുന്നാൾ ദിവസം) പരിശുദ്ധ ഗീവർഗ്ഗീസ് ദ്വിതീയൻ ബാവാ തിരുമനസ്സിലെ പ്രധാന കാർമ്മികത്വത്തിൽ ഇടവക മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്ത അഭിവന്ദ്യ പൗലോസ് മാർ സേവേറിയോസ്, കണ്ടനാട് ഭദ്രാസനത്തിൻറെ അഭിവന്ദ്യ ഔഗേൻ മാർ തീമോത്തിയോസ്, പൗലോസ് മാർ പീലക്സിനോസ് എന്നീ തിരുമേനിമാരുടെ സഹ കാർമ്മികത്വത്തിലും പള്ളിയുടെ പുനർനിർമ്മാണത്തിന് ശിലസ്ഥാപനം നടത്തി.
1962 ജനുവരി 14, 15 തീയതികളിലായി പരിശുദ്ധ ഗീവർഗ്ഗീസ് ദ്വിതീയൻ ബാവാ തിരുമനസ്സിലെ പ്രധാന കാർമ്മികത്വത്തിലും ഇടവക മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്ത അഭിവന്ദ്യ പൗലോസ് മാർ സേവേറിയോസ്, കണ്ടനാട് ഇടവകയുടെ അഭിവന്ദ്യ ഔഗേൻ മാർ തിമോത്തിയോസ് എന്നീ തിരുമേനിമാരുടെ സഹകാർമ്മികത്വത്തിലും അഞ്ചു ത്രോണോസുള്ള മദ്ബഹായും പള്ളിയും കൂദാശചെയ്ത് വി. ബലി അർപ്പിച്ചു.
1972 മുതൽ ഇടവക വികസനത്തിൻറെ പാതയിൽ നടന്നു നീങ്ങുവാൻ തുടങ്ങി. 09/06/1974-ൽ എളംകുളം സെമിത്തേരിയുടെ കൂദാശയും പരുമല തിരുമേനിയുടെ നാമത്തിൽ ചാപ്പലിൻറെ ശിലാസ്ഥാപനവും ഇടവക മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്ത യൂഹാനോൻ മാർ സേവേറിയോസ് തിരുമനസ്സുകൊണ്ട് നിർവ്വഹിച്ചു. 1976 ഒക്ടോബറിൽ ചാപ്പൽ പണി പൂർത്തിയാക്കി കൂദാശ ചെയ്ത് ബലി അർപ്പിച്ചു.
എളംകുളം ചാപ്പൽ
ഇടവക സ്ഥാപിച്ച് 60 വർഷം പിന്നിട്ടതിൻറെ സ്മരണയിൽ ഒരേ സമയത്ത് തേവരയിലും പാലാരിവട്ടത്തും ഓരോ ചാപ്പലുകൾ പണിതു. 1986 ഒക്ടോബറിൽ പ. മാർത്തോമ്മ ശ്ലീഹായുടെ നാമത്തിൽ ശിലാസ്ഥാപനം നടത്തി. 1987 ജനുവരിയിൽ കൂദാശ ചെയ്ത് വി. കുർബ്ബാന അർപ്പിച്ചു.
തേവര ചാപ്പൽ
1986 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 14-ന് വികാരി ഫാദർ ഒ. വി. ഏലിയാസ് കല്ലിട്ട് പണി ആരംഭിച്ച മാർ ഗീവർഗ്ഗീസ് സഹദായുടെ നാമത്തിലുള്ള ചാപ്പൽ പണിതീർത്ത് 1987 മേയ് മാസത്തിൽ കൂദാശ ചെയ്ത് വി. കുർബ്ബാന അർപ്പിച്ചു.
പാലാരിവട്ടം ചാപ്പൽ
ചിറ്റൂർ റോഡ് സെമിത്തേരിയിൽ 72 അറകളുള്ള ഒരു വോൾട്ട് പണിത്, 1986-ൽ കൂദാശ ചെയ്ത് ശവസംസ്കാരത്തിനായി സമർപ്പിച്ചു. 1990-ൽ ചാപ്പൽ പുതുക്കി പണിത് കൂദാശ ചെയ്ത് ബലി അർപ്പിച്ചു.
ചിറ്റൂർ റോഡ് സെമിത്തേരി ചാപ്പൽ
1986-ൽ തൃക്കാക്കര പടമുഗൾ ഭാഗത്ത് 41.5 സെൻറ് സ്ഥലം വാങ്ങി. ആ സ്ഥലം പള്ളിയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഒരു സംഭാവനയോടെ സ്വതന്ത്ര ഇടവകയായി വിട്ടു കൊടുത്തു.
സെൻറ് ജോൺ ദി ബാപ്റ്റിസ്റ്റ് പള്ളി, പടമുഗൾ
26.5 സെൻറ് വിസ്തൃതിയുള്ള സെമിത്തേരിയാണ് പള്ളിയുടെ പേരിൽ എളംകുളത്തുള്ളത്. 160 അറകളുള്ള ഒരു ഇരുനില വോൾട്ട് പണിത് ഉപയോഗിച്ചുവരുന്നു.
എളംകുളം വോൾട്ട്/സെമിത്തേരി
2001 ജൂൺ 28-ാം തിയതി അഭിവന്ദ്യ സഖറിയ മാർ അന്തോണിയോസ് തിരുമേനി പരുമലതിരുമേനിയുടെ നാമത്തിൽ ദേവാലയത്തിൻറെ കല്ലിടീൽ കർമ്മം നിർവ്വഹിച്ചു. 2001 നവമ്പർ 21, 22 തീയതികളിലായി കൂദാശ ചെയ്ത് ബലി അർപ്പിച്ചു.
വൈറ്റില മാർ ഗ്രിഗോറിയോസ് ഓർത്തഡോക്സ് പള്ളി
പുതിയ കുരിശിൻതൊട്ടിയും 3 നില ഷോപ്പിംഗ് കോംപ്ലക്സും പണിയുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടി 2011 ജൂലൈ 8-ാം തിയതി ഇടവക മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്ത അഭിവന്ദ്യ ഡോക്ടർ യാക്കോബ് മാർ ഐറേനിയോസ് തിരുമേനിയുടെ സഹകാർമ്മികത്വത്തിൽ പ. ബസേലിയോസ് മാർത്തോമ്മ പൗലോസ് ദ്വിതീയൻ ബാവാ തിരുമനസ്സുകൊണ്ട് ശിലാസ്ഥാപനം നടത്തി.
പുണ്യശ്ലോകനായ ജോസഫ് മാർ പക്കോമിയോസ് തിരുമേനിയുടെ (മുൻ വികാരി ബഹ. പി. വി. ജോസഫച്ചൻ) പാവനസ്മരണക്കായി ഇടവക ഏർപ്പെടുത്തിയ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ സഹായ പദ്ധതിയാണ് "സ്നേഹനിധി" എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. കൊച്ചി, അങ്കമാലി, കണ്ടനാട് ഈസ്റ്റ്, കണ്ടനാട് വെസ്റ്റ് ഈ ഭദ്രാസനങ്ങളിലെ അപേക്ഷകരിൽ നിന്ന് അർഹതയുടെ വെളിച്ചത്തിൽ തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെടുന്ന സാമ്പത്തിക ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുള്ളവരും പഠിക്കുവാൻ സമർത്ഥരുമായ 100 പേർക്കാണ് ഈ സഹായം നൽകിവരുന്നത്. ഒരോ വർഷവും 15 ലക്ഷം രൂപയോളം ഈ കാര്യത്തിൽ ചിലവിടുന്നു.
പുതുക്കിപണിത് 1962-ൽ കൂദാശ ചെയ്ത പള്ളിയുടെ രൂപവും ഭാവവും അഴകും വർദ്ധിപ്പിച്ച് സ്ഥല സൗകര്യം കൂട്ടി ഭിത്തിയിൽ തിരുവത്താഴത്തിൻറെയും മാലാഖമാരുടെയും Painting നടത്തി വീണ്ടും മോടിപിടിപ്പിച്ച് ഇന്നത്തെ നിലയിൽ ആക്കിയത് 2011-ൽ ആണ്. അക്കാര്യങ്ങൾക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നൽകിയത് ശ്രീ. ജോർജ് പോളും ശ്രീ. കെ. കെ. ജോർജും ആയിരുന്നു.
ആർക്കിടെക്ക്റ്റ് തോമസ് ജോർജിന് (ശില്പി ബാബു) പരിശുദ്ധ മാത്യൂസ് പ്രഥമൻ ബാവ തിരുമേനി മെഡൽ സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നു
ഇടവകയുടെ ആരംഭകാലം മുതൽ തന്നെ ജീവകാരുണ്യ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിൽ പ്രത്യേകം ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിരുന്നു. എല്ലാ മാസവും മൂന്നാ ഞായറാഴ്ചയിലെ കാണിക്കയും, വിവാഹവാർഷിക സംഭാവനകളും ചേർത്ത് ഗണ്യമായ ഒരു തുക ഇതിനായി ചിലവാക്കുന്നു. ഭവനം പണിത് നൽകൽ, ചികിത്സാസഹായം, വിവാഹസഹായം തുടങ്ങിയ ഇനങ്ങളിലാണ് മുഖ്യമായും ഈ തുക നൽകിവരുന്നത്.
സെൻറ് മേരീസിൻറെ ജീവകാരുണ്യ പ്രവർത്തിൻറെ ഭാഗമായി എറണാകുളം ജനറൽ ആശുപത്രിയിലെ കാൻസർ വാർഡ് രോഗികൾക്കുള്ള മരുന്ന് കൊച്ചി മേയർ ഏൽപ്പിക്കുന്നു
ഇടവകയിൽ ശുശ്രൂഷ അനുഷ്ടിച്ചിരുന്ന മൂന്ന് വൈദികർ മേൽപ്പട്ട സ്ഥാനത്തേക്ക് ഉയർത്തപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്:
ബ. പി. വി. ജോസഫച്ചൻ — 1975-ൽ ജോസഫ് മാർ പക്കോമിയോസ് എന്ന പേരിൽ മേൽപ്പട്ടക്കാരനായി വാഴിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. കണ്ടനാട് ഭദ്രാസനമെത്രാപ്പോലീത്തയായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചുവരവേ 1991-ൽ ദിവംഗതനായി.
ബ. കെ. ഐ. പോളച്ചൻ — 1985-ൽ മേൽപ്പട്ടക്കാരനായി വാഴിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. 2010 നവംബർ 1-ൽ പ. ബസേലിയോസ് മാർത്തോമ്മ പൗലോസ് ദ്വിതീയൻ എന്ന പേരിൽ പൗരസ്ത്യ കാതോലിക്കയും മലങ്കര മെത്രപ്പോലീത്തായുമായി സ്ഥാനാരോഹണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
ബ. പി. എസ്. യോഹന്നാനച്ചൻ — 2009-ൽ യൂഹാനോൻ മാർ പോളികാർപ്പോസ് എന്ന പേരിൽ വാഴിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. അങ്കമാലി ഭദ്രാസനത്തിൻറെ മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്തായായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചുവരുന്നു.
Our church the Malankara Church is as old as Christianity and was founded by Apostle St. Thomas in the 1st century. The Portuguese Roman Catholic Archbishop Meneses of Goa invaded in the 16th Century and ruthlessly tried to bring the ancient church under the Church of Rome. The invasion resulted in the division of the Malankara Church in many places. The people living around Edappally joined the Catholics, leaving no one to represent our ancient church in Ernakulam.
In the beginning of the 20th Century there were only a few members of our church in Ernakulam. Four illustrious and devout members got together and decided to purchase a piece of land for the construction of a church building. They were P.V. Philip Vakil, Rao Sahib P.K. Varghese, M.G. Varkey and M.A. Chacko. A committee of 11 persons purchased 28 cents of land in 1922 with the help of Cherai and Ayyampilly parishes.
Philip Vakil, who worked hard for the church, passed away before its completion. He was buried in the church plot with special government permission. His tomb is now at the northern side of the present church. The remaining members, along with K.C. Varkey Master, M.T. Mathew and T. Thomas, built a hall at the southern side. The church was consecrated on 6th October 1926 by Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Murimattathil of Kolenchery, with Fr. M.P. Pathrose and Rev. Fr. Mureekal Yaccob (the first vicar). Fr. Mureekal and first Trustee Sri. P.V. Kurian continued in their positions for a long time.
A raffle was organised under M.A. Chacko and Dr. Paul Puthooran in 1932 to collect funds for a cemetery and chapel. The proceeds were used to purchase 15 cents of land at Chittoor Road and also 5.5 cents more for the church plot.
A meeting of Parishioners held on 22nd January 1958 decided to rebuild the church. The foundation stone was laid by Catholicose H.H. Mar Baselius Geevarghese II on St. Mary's Day, January 15, 1959. A construction committee of 25 members was formed under the leadership of Hon. Retd. Chief Justice Sri. K.T. Koshy. Engineer T.K. Thomas prepared the plan and supervised construction.
H.H. the Catholicose Mar Baselius Geevarghese II, assisted by the Diocesan Metropolitan H.G. Paulose Mar Severios and H.G. Augen Mar Themotheus of Kandanad Diocese, consecrated the Church with five altars and celebrated the Holy Qurbana on January 14–15, 1962.
During February and April 1972, land was purchased at Elamkulam for a cemetery. On 9th June 1974, the Diocesan Metropolitan H.G. Yuhanon Mar Severios laid the foundation stone of the Mar Gregorios Chapel. The consecration was performed by the Catholicose H.H. Baselius Marthoma Mathews I assisted by H.G. Yuhanon Mar Severios and H.G. Joseph Mar Pachomios on 30–31 October 1976. Architect Thomas George (Silpi Babu) designed the chapel.
Mar Gregorios Chapel, Elamkulam
35 cents of land was purchased at Thevara in 1975. The foundation stone for the chapel in the name of St. Thomas was laid by H.G. Yuhanon Mar Severios on 5th October 1986. The consecration was performed by H.H. Baselius Marthoma Mathews I on 24–25 January 1987.

Rev. Fr. O.V. Elias, the Vicar, laid the foundation stone for the chapel in the name of St. George on 14th September 1986. The Chapel was consecrated by H.H. Catholicose Designate Mathews Mar Coorilos during 9–10 May 1987. The Architect was Thomas George (Silpi Babu).

A vault with 72 cells was built at Chittoor Road Cemetery and consecrated by the Diocesan Metropolitan on 14th December 1986.

41.5 cents of land was purchased at Thrikakkara near Padamughal junction in 1986–87, and later given as a donation to form an independent parish.

A new parish was formed at Vayttila. H.G. Zachariah Mar Anthonios laid the foundation stone on 28th June 2001. The church was consecrated by H.H. Baselius Marthoma Mathews II on 21–22 November 2001.
Vayttila Mar Gregorios Orthodox Church
H.H. Baselius Marthoma Paulose II laid the foundation stone for the new Kurisinthotty and 3-storey Shopping Complex on 8th July 2011.
The "Snehanidhi" educational assistance programme was established in memory of the late Joseph Mar Pachomios (formerly Rev. Fr. P.V. Joseph). Approximately 100 deserving and meritorious students from the Kochi, Angamaly, Kandanad East and Kandanad West dioceses receive scholarships each year. Around Rs. 15 lakhs is spent annually on this programme.
The church consecrated in 1962 was beautifully renovated in 2011, with expanded space, murals of the Last Supper and angels on the walls. Sri. George Paul and Sri. K.K. George led the renovation work.

From its earliest days, the parish has been active in charity — providing housing assistance, medical support and marriage aid. The third Sunday offertory and wedding anniversary donations are dedicated entirely to charitable work each month.
