Marthamariam Vanitha Samajam
Marthamariam Vanitha Samajam was established in our Parish in 1957 under the leadership of Rev.Fr. Jacob Murickal. There were about 15 members in the beginning. Fr. Murickal was the President and Mrs. Marykutty Kurian, Thaikkadavil was the vice- president. Mrs. Molly Mathen Mookancheril was the Treasurer cum Secretary for almost ten or eleven years. The monthly subscription was four annas, equivalent to the current 25 paise. Since then we have come a long way to be the organisation we are now.
Even during the formative years the Samajam tried its best to help the poor and needy whenever it was necessary. The construction of a house for a deserving woman in Ponnurunny is worth mentioning here. The samajam also extended a helping hand to some of the orphanages and patients in their treatment .
The Marthamariam Samajam was officially formed as a Parish-Diocese-Church Organisation in the year 1964 with H G Puthencavu Geevarghese Mar Philexenos as President and Kandathyl K.M Annamma as secretary.
Its central office is at Kanjukkuzhi, Kottayam. Our unit is now under the main organisation.
The Mar Gregorios Orthodox Christian Students Movement M.G.O.C.S.M.),Ernakulam Unit, has an enviable record of more than four decades of fruitful activity at the St.Mary's Orthodox Cathedral , Ernakulam. Conceived of as an organization to provide direction, support and spiritual guidance to the student community, with a firm grounding in the Orthodox faith, the movement has provedits worth and utility over the years in shaping the character, conduct and personality of every Orthodox Christian student. Under the inspiring stewardship of Rev. Fr. P.V.Joseph, who later on became H G Joseph Mar Pachomios, the activities of MGOCSM aquired great momentum. Rev.Fr. O.V.Elias and Rev.Fr. K.I.Paul (Presently, H G Paulose Mar Milithios, Catholicose Designate) are some of the stalwarts who led the Movement in the past. The activities of the unit include charity work, service to humanity, community education, discussions, debates, retreats and cultural activities.
The MGOCSM generates its funds from 'Fund raising activities' conducted by them. The students of the numerous educational institutions of the surrounding areas costitutes the membership of the MGOCSM and represent a dynamic cross section of the student community. The MGOCSM offers them an opportunity to interact with the senior members of the church, eminent members of the clergy as well as distinguised members of the community. The meetings of the MGOCSM provide a forum for the students to freely air their views, enter into debates and to exchange ideas. It is heartening to note that former members of the MGOCSM are all occupying positions of repute in the society.. Their success is atributable in no small measure to the values they have imbibed from the activities of the MGOCSM. The movement functions actively to this day, guiding and inspiring the students of the present High Tech Generation also.
